“Pet Sets”
Posted by: Ed
Have you ever put together a set without a good reason? “Pet Sets” are the sets that just feel right or look good, not necessarily ones that will increase in value. For some reason I became obsessed with the 2000 Bowman’s Best cards a few years back.
I started with Willie Bloomquist. He was a Seattle Mariner rookie that year. I started buying boxes until I found one and then needed to get all of the other cards to complete the master set. It was a journey that lasted about 2 years and cost way more than it should have. When all was said and done I did get a few pretty good cards.
It was the rookie year for Johan Santana and Francisco Rodriguez.
The set also came with game pieces of the bat and autographs. There were signatures from Cal Ripken, Johnny Bench, and Sean Casey. The cards were beautiful and well made. Though not a good financial investment I will be able to look at the set and remember all of the shows and shops that I visited to put together my 2000 Bowman’s Best set.
If you have a favorite set let us know! You may even be asked to join us in a segment of the podcast!

What’s more, Upper Deck has included a special assortment of “mystery redemption” jersey cards of up-and-coming roundball players who participated in the 2008 Michael Jordan Brand All-American Classic, a four-day tournament which features the world’s best young basketball players: 20 of the nation’s top high school players, along with 16 international high school standouts. Names of the rising stars included in the mystery redemption jersey card lineup will be released over the next month.
“We are extremely excited about this set,” said Brandon Miller, Upper Deck’s Basketball brand manager. “Collectors always expect great basketball cards from Upper Deck and this assortment includes a phenomenal mix of star players past and present, a terrific amount of autograph cards from basketball’s best talent, and a look at some of the best future stars on the horizon.”

All three spokesmen have autographed cards appearing in Draft Edition’s “Alma Mater” insert collection. Other basketball greats who appear in the set include Magic Johnson, Hakeem Olajuwon and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
